Velma S. Freeman , devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, beloved teacher and cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026, at the age of 85. Born in Warren County, Georgia, on September 2, 1940, to the late Herman and Opal Smith. Velma spent her life in dedication to her family and her passion for education.
For 30 years, Velma taught in the Paulding County School System, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students. Her commitment didn't stop at the classroom; she also served on the Library Board for many years, advocating for the love of reading and learning in her community.
Velma had many passions. She loved tending to her garden and spending time outdoors, nurturing plants and enjoying the beauty of nature. An avid traveler, she explored various countries, including Italy, France, and England, but the mountains always held a special place in her heart.
Along with her parents and her husband Velma was preceded in death by her brothers, James Smith, and Thomas Smith.
Velma was married to her late husband, Billy Freeman, for 56 wonderful years. Together, they created a family that brought them immense pride. She is survived by her daughter, Mona (Tim) Lord; her son, Alan (Michele) Freeman; and her sister, Joyce Adkins. Velma will be dearly missed by her grandchildren: Erin (Dustin) McGehee, Zachary Freeman, Kassidy Freeman, Bailey Freeman, Jared Jenkins, and Colton (Jessica) Lord. She was also a great-grandmother to Addison McGehee, Kian Toorie, Haley McGehee, Morgan McGehee, Jase Lord, Kinslee Sue Lord, Luka Granados, and Andi Van Leuven.
Friends and family will gather to celebrate Velma's life on Friday, March 27, 2026. A visitation will be held at Clark Funeral Home from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service in the Sam Clark Chapel at 2:00 PM with Rev. Don Rackley officiating. Afterward, Velma will be laid to rest at Dallas Memory Gardens with Alan Freeman, Zack Freeman, Jared Jenkins, Colton Lord, Tim Lord, and Dustin McGehee serving as pallbearers.
Velma Freeman will be fondly remembered for her warm spirit, her unwavering love, and her incredible impact on the lives of those around her. She truly made the world a better place, and her legacy will continue to live on through her family and friends.
