Thomas "Tom" Peter Hansen, Jr.

September 29, 1973 — September 4, 2025

Thomas "Tom" Peter Hansen Jr., 51, a beloved husband, father, son, and Papa, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 4, 2025. Born on September 29, 1973, in Norfolk, Virginia, Tom lived his life filled with love, laughter, happiness, and an unwavering dedication to those he held close. He had a one-of-a-kind sense of humor and loved making those around him laugh. Tom was a bright light in the lives of those who knew him, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of kindness. His selflessness and warmth will be greatly missed.

After graduating from ODU with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a master’s degree in business and applied mathematics, Tom started with Norfolk Southern as a co-op on September 7, 2006, and began his career full time as a management trainee on September 10, 2007. Beginning in 2019, Tom served as a Group Manager in Customer Service. He was responsible for Norfolk Southern's Strategic (Top 300) customers in the metals commodity. He led a team of five managers/assistant managers and regularly worked with other departments to assist with customers' needs and issues. Tom was not only a dedicated, exceptional employee throughout his tenure, but he was also a beloved friend to everyone within the NS organization. He was loved, respected, and trusted by his friends, colleagues, and customers. He left a lasting impression that will be missed by all who knew him.

Beyond work, Tom's life centered around his family. He was a devoted husband, son, father, and grandfather "Papa". He was an extremely proud Papa to his granddaughter, Emmalena "Emmie." He spent countless hours sharing his love with her—from taking her on vacations, going to all of her school events, watching their favorite show Teen Titans together, spontaneous doughnut trips on the weekend, or simply enjoying one-on-one time. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family.

Tom was a talented piano player. He also had a passion for cooking and spent time perfecting recipes until they were just right. His perfectly seasoned and cooked steaks and soups will be greatly missed. He was an avid animal lover and leaves behind his cherished four-legged friends: Roxie, Buddy, Ellie, Luna, and Kevin.

Tom was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Peter Hansen. He is survived by his loving mother, Carolyn Hansen; his beloved wife, Lisa Mihay; their daughters, Analesa Trowbridge and Amelia (Jefferson) Clarke; and his granddaughter, Emmalena "Emmie" Trowbridge.
