Mary Jo Hand

Mary Jo Hand, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on August 29, 1949, in Hillsboro, Illinois, to the late Edmond and Irene Vandever, Mary Jo was a vibrant spirit who brought joy to everyone around her.

Known for her fantastic sense of humor, she was always the life of the party, filling rooms with laughter and love. Mary Jo cherished family gatherings, where her cooking skills truly shone, and the best memories were made. Her heart was happiest when her home was full of family, especially her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary Jo was also a dedicated dog mom, and her two pups, Lucy and Taffy, brought her immense joy. She loved them fiercely and treated them like family. A true beach lover at heart, her happy place was soaking up the sun and listening to Jimmy Buffett, dreaming of the shore even when she wasn't there.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Carolyn Sue Vandever and Diane Maloney; and, most recently, her son, Joshua Harston, and her daughter, Julie Simek.

She is survived by her son, Blake (Denise) Harston; her daughter, Suzanne (Tim) Cotton; her sister, Nancy Vandever; her nine beloved grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family has decided to memorialize the amazing lives of Julie, Joshua, and Mary Jo all together. Visitation will be held at Clark Funeral Home on February 7, 2026, from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm, followed by a memorial service in the Sam Clark Chapel at 2:00 pm. Come join us to celebrate the wonderful lives of Joshua, Julie and Mary Jo and the countless memories they created with all of us. We'll be sharing stories, laughter, and maybe even a few tears, just the way they would have wanted it.

Rest in peace, Joshua, Julie, and Mary Jo. You will all be missed every day.
