Jonah L. Johnson

Jonah L. Johnson, 93, of Powder Springs, Georgia, passed away on August 1, 2026, at Cobb Tranquility Hospice in Austell, Georgia. He was the son of the late Talt and Annie Mae Johnson of Cairo, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy Wade Johnson; his son, Gregory Hayes Johnson; his son-in-law, Mark Folsom; his sister, Mona Parrott; and his brothers, Maynard Johnson and Amon Johnson.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Melissa Johnson Folsom; his granddaughter, Caroline Folsom Sanders (Tyler), who was the apple of his eye; Frederick Brooks; and several nieces and nephews.

Jonah was known by many names throughout his life, including Jonah, Jonie, J.L., Pops, and Pawpaw. No matter what you called him, he always had a smile on his face.

He grew up on a farm in Cairo, Georgia. He joined the United States Air Force, where he served as an Air Police officer and was a member of the Laon Air Police Association in Laon, France, during the Korean War.

After completing his military service, Jonah began a 40-year career with CSX Railroad, where he held many positions, including serving as President of the Yardmasters of America for his region. He worked from 1955 until his retirement in 1995.

After retiring from the railroad, Jonah volunteered with the Paulding Senior Center, delivering Meals on Wheels for three years. He then worked for Enterprise Car Rental in Hiram for 18 years, leaving at the age of 86 to care for his beloved wife.

Jonah loved to travel, especially remembering his time stationed in France and attending the French Riviera. He and Judy traveled throughout the United States, with some of their favorite destinations being the coast of Maine and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

A private burial will be held at Kennesaw Memorial Cemetery, where Jonah will be laid to rest beside his loving wife, Judy.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Hiram, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to Lighthouse Baptist Church, 205 Pace Road, Hiram, GA 30141, in Jonah's memory.
