John "Ed" Fondren passed away at the remarkable age of 103, leaving behind a lifetime of wonderful memories, incredible stories, and a legacy of love and encouragement.
Ed was a natural storyteller who always had a tale to share and a special place in his heart for the underdog. He believed everyone deserved a little encouragement and a chance to be their very best. Whether sharing a story, offering advice, or cheering someone on, Ed had a way of making others feel valued and appreciated.
Born in Macon, Georgia, Ed was one of seven children. Some of his fondest memories came from his childhood in Toccoa, Georgia. He loved reminiscing about traveling by train, spending time with his mother in the garden, and growing up during the Great Depression. Having lived through more than a century of history, Ed certainly had no shortage of stories to tell!
On June 30, 1942, at just 18 years old, Ed enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, where he became a B-17 bomber pilot stationed in Germany. After returning home, he continued his education and graduated from North Carolina State University. He went on to enjoy a successful career with the railroad, working for more than 40 years as a senior industrial engineer before retiring from Norfolk Southern Railway in Atlanta in 1987.
Above all, Ed treasured the people who were part of his life. He was a man who had seen so much, experienced so much, and always had something worth sharing. His stories, wisdom, and encouraging spirit will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Fondren, and his granddaughter, Sarah Coulter.
He is survived by his four children, John (Melissa) Fondren, Franz Fondren, Margaret Duncan, and Becky (Fred) Cochran; his grandchildren, Emily (Mark) DaVane, Evan (Ashley) Fondren, James (Stacie) Duncan, Beth Buchanan, Holly (Frank) Caldwell, Bradley (Eve) Cochran, and Catharine (Chris) Cofer; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed will be laid to rest on Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Kennesaw Memorial Park, with Rev. Don Rackley officiating.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Lysbeth and Kanini for the loving care, kindness, and compassion they showed Ed each day. They would also like to recognize Jerry, Dave, Reid, Jennifer, and the many friends in his community who brought friendship and joy to his life.
