Howard Garland, born September 8, 1946, in Murphy, North Carolina, passed away after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and a faithful servant of God whose life reflected kindness, humility, and unwavering faith.
Howard was the son of Ed and Desma Garland and grew up alongside his siblings Betty Davis, Danny Garland, Harold Garland, Edward Garland, Steve Garland, and Diane Notheisen, with whom he shared a close and lifelong bond. He graduated from Hiwassee Dam High School in 1964 before beginning a life defined by hard work and dedication.
After leaving North Carolina, Howard spent time in Hickory before eventually settling in the Atlanta area. He worked as an iron worker for many years and was a proud member of Iron Workers Union Local 387 before continuing his career with General Motors at the Doraville plant, where he faithfully worked for 30 years until retirement. Even after retiring, Howard remained active, working several more years and continuing to serve others in every way he could.
A man of deep faith, Howard was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Woodstock and later attended Burnt Hickory Baptist Church in Powder Springs, Georgia. His love for the Lord was evident in how he lived-quietly, faithfully, and with a heart for people. In his free time, Howard enjoyed watching NASCAR races, proudly cheering on #5 Kyle Larson every Sunday, keeping up with the news on Fox News, and spending simple, meaningful moments at home.
Howard is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda Garland; his son, Chris Garland, and daughter-in-law, Nichole Garland; his stepson, Tony Greene; and his cherished siblings, Betty Davis, Danny Garland, Harold Garland, Edward Garland, Steve Garland, and Diane Notheisen, with whom he remained very close throughout his life. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss his steady presence and gentle spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Desna Garland, and his son, David Garland.
Funeral services will be held at Clark Funeral Home on Saturday, April 25. Visitation will take place from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with the service immediately following. I lieu of flowers, donation may be made in memory of Howard to Burnt Hickory Baptist Church at burnthickory.com. Online condolences may shared with the family at www.samclarkfuneralhome.com
He will be remembered as a kind and caring man, a faithful husband, and a man of God who lived his life with purpose and integrity. His legacy of love, faith, and hard work will live on in all who knew him. "Well done, good and faithful servant." - Matthew 25:23
