It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Howard Richard Ballwanz, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who died on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at the age of 88. He was born and raised in the suburbs of South Chicago, IL, and was the son of the late Frank and Eleanor Ballwanz.
Howard earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Northern Illinois University, laying a strong foundation for his distinguished career as a professor. He devoted 33 years of his life to teaching at Montclair State University, where he inspired countless students with his passion for knowledge and commitment to their success. In addition to his academic contributions, Howard honorably served in the Peace Corps as a member of the first group of volunteers in Ghana from 1961 to 1963, a testament to his dedication to making a positive impact in the world.
Howard held a deep love for listening to shortwave radio, a hobby that reflected his curiosity about the world beyond his immediate surroundings. He was also actively involved in union activities, championing workers' rights and advocating for social justice throughout his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Geraldine Ballwanz; his son, Steven Ballwanz; his daughter, Michelle Wolven; and his son-in-law, Michael Wolven. Howard took great joy in his role as a grandfather to his five grandsons-Eli, Timothy, Micah, Andrew, and Dominic Wolven-and his four granddaughters-Mary Wolven, Brianna Wolven, Ashleigh Wolven, and Caitlin Thomas-and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear sister, Donna Lessard, along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his twin brother, Roy Ballwanz.
