Harold "Smitty" Leroy Smith Sr., age 93, of Dallas, Georgia, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026.
Born on August 20, 1932, in Poland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Wayne and Marie Smith. Smitty lived a life defined by service, hard work, devotion to his family, and unwavering principles.
Smitty proudly served his country in the United States Army for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7). A dedicated soldier, he was offered promotion to E-8 on several occasions but chose to remain in the role he loved. Following his military career, he continued serving his community through various occupations, including working as a maintenance technician for the Paulding County School District, as well as spending time as a truck driver and with the local water department.
Outside of work, Smitty enjoyed fishing, collecting firearms, and spending time with his fellow retired veterans. Many mornings were spent at Rodney's, where he and his friends gathered to share stories, laughter, and friendship.
Above all else, Smitty was devoted to his family. He believed in discipline, responsibility, and doing things the right way. He was known for being a strict father who set high expectations for his children, but beneath that firm exterior was a man whose love for his family never had to be questioned. His guidance, sacrifices, and steadfast support helped shape the lives of those he loved most.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Phyllis Simon and Lucy Benington.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Donna Smith; his children, Harold (Janet) Smith Jr., Larry Smith, and Terri (Mitch) Mastell; his grandsons, Mitchell Mastell and Miles Mastell; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends, including his cherished group of retired veterans who regularly met at Rodney's.
Smitty will be remembered for his dedication to his country, his strong work ethic, his willingness to help others, and the lasting example he set for his family. His legacy of strength, integrity, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
