Dora Dean Sweatt Thurmond

August 16, 1924 — March 16, 2024

Dora Dean Sweatt Thurmond passed away on March 16, 2024, at age 99. She was born on August 16, 1924, to the late Beecher and Gladys Sweatt in Dallas, Georgia. Dora was a faithful and devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church where she joined on September 9, 1939. She taught Sunday school there for many years and loved sharing God's Word with all the children. In Dora's life, God came first, and she made sure her children knew that too. Her church and church family meant the world to her, and she cherished her time spent there. Dora loved quilting and made hundreds of quilt tops. She loved sharing them with family and friends and enjoyed the thought of one day having them passed down through the generations.

Recently, she took a liking to word puzzles and could usually be found working diligently on one. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother who will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Dora is preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Pleasant Marion Thurmond; her daughter-in-law, Shirley Thurmond; sisters, Virginia Crowe and Carrie Phillips; and her infant brother.

She is survived by her two children, Joyce (Billy) Atcheson and Mike Thurmond; two grandchildren, Jeff (Pam) Atcheson, Joey (Meghan) Thurmond; one great-granddaughter, Brandy Atcheson; four great-grandsons, Jesse Atcheson, Tyler Thurmond, Joey (Lauren) Saxton, Josh Theobold; one great-great-grandson, Sam Saxton; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and loved ones at Clark Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.

Funeral services for Mrs. Thurmond will begin at 2:00 PM in the Clark Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Joey Thurmond officiating.

Interment will follow at Dallas Memory Gardens with Jeff Atcheson, Joey Saxton, Joey Thurmond, Mike Thurmond, Tyler Thurmond, and Larry Cason serving as Pallbearers.

Clark Funeral Home is honored to care for the Thurmond family during this difficult time.
