Carlos E. Barrera - Hurtado

May 14, 1972 — May 19, 2026

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carlos E. Barrera-Hurtado, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, and friend, who passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the age of 54.

Born on May 14, 1972, in El Salvador, Carlos came to the United States at the age of 16 with determination, courage, and dreams of building a better life. He worked tirelessly to learn English, create opportunities for himself, and build a life centered around hard work, love, and family. Through perseverance and unwavering dedication, he created a legacy that will live on through everyone who knew and loved him.

Carlos devoted more than 27 years of his life to Costco, where he was respected not only for his work ethic and leadership, but for the pride he took in everything he did. He was a mentor to many, always willing to lend a hand, offer advice, or encourage someone who needed it. Carlos never met a stranger. His warm personality, unmistakable Spanish accent, and ability to make people feel welcome left a lasting impression everywhere he went.

Above all else, Carlos was a loving father and devoted provider who worked endlessly to care for the people he loved. He enjoyed life's simple pleasures - cheering on the Yankees, watching soccer games, admiring nice cars, listening to 80's rock music, and gathering family and friends around the table with a home-cooked meal. He was especially known for his cooking and it brought him great joy preparing meals for others.

In recent years, Carlos fought a courageous 2.5 year battle with ALS. Even in the face of unimaginable hardship, he continued to show incredible strength, resilience, and love for his family. His courage throughout this journey inspired everyone around him.

He is survived by his wife, Jessica Barrera; his children, Yariza Ortega, Carlos Alexander Barrera, Elijah Barrera, Estevana Barrera, Eric Barrera, and Elaina Barrera; his cherished grandson, Sylas Ortega; and his siblings, Josefina Barrera, Saul Barrera, and David Barrera. His love, laughter, wisdom, and strength will live on through each of them.

Though his journey ended far too soon, Carlos leaves behind a life defined by courage, sacrifice, loyalty, laughter, and a deep love for his family. He will be greatly missed and remembered always.

To honor Carlos' life, a funeral service will be held at Sam Clark Chapel on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 4:00 pm, with Rev. Don Rackley officiating. Prior to the service, a visitation will take place at Clark Funeral Home, starting at 2:00 pm. Following the ceremonies, and in accordance with Carlos wishes, he will be cremated.
