Capt. Robert Akers

Retired Army Captain Robert Akers, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed veteran of the US Army, passed away on October 21, 2024, after a life well-lived and well-loved. He was born on July 21, 1941, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. CPT Akers dedicated his career to serving his country with honor, reaching the rank of Captain in the Army. He was a gunship helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War and a Purple Heart Recipient. After twenty years in the Army, CPT Akers spent the next 20 years as a Senior JROTC instructor mentoring teenagers in Atlanta Public Schools. After retiring yet again, he served as the Douglas County Elections Superintendent for 5 years.

He met his wife Beverly at Fort McPherson where she worked in Civil Service. They had a truly remarkable 48 years together. They raised their 4 children at First Baptist Church of Lithia Springs where Robert served as a Sunday School teacher. In his later years, he enjoyed his time in the Good Old Boys Sunday School class. He was an avid golfer, loved his music, books, and old Western movies. He loved seafood and got great joy of spending time at Jekyll Island every summer with his family.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Beverly Akers, his children Carrie Akers-Delagarza, Bobby Akers, Denise Akers, Brian Akers (Gaan), Zach Akers, Jacob Akers (Amber), nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and extended family who all loved him beyond measure. He was an advocate for his family and people of all walks of life. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services to honor his life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Lithia Springs on Saturday, October 26, 2024, with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m and service to follow at 2pm. The burial will take place at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr., Canton, GA on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at 9:30 a.m with military honors. In lieu of flowers, you may mail donations to the First Baptist Church of Lithia Springs in memory of Robert Akers at 10531 Verterans Memorial Hwy, Lithia Springs, GA 30122.

Captain Akers' legacy of dedication and service will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He is in heaven rejoicing with the angels.
